Radio Man to contest Latham Seat in By-Election

One half of the once top rating Club Veg team on Triple M, Mal Lees, will stand as a candidate in the Werriwa by-election, promising free beer, tollways abolished and a loud shirt day once a month!

These days, Lees co-hosts breakfast on Campbelltown based C91.3FM and has announced he will throw his ‘cowboy’ hat into the ring and contest the seat of Werriwa, vacated by the retirement of (then) Federal Opposition Leader, Mark Latham.

His candidature has for the poll on 19 March has been confirmed, with nominations being declared by the returning officer in Campbelltown.

Lees says: “This is not a stunt – but it’s very close to it!”

It is not his first foray into politics. He stood for the Senate while part of the Club Veg team.

“I polled pretty badly then, and expect the same miserable result this time around.”

Lees took the hat around C91.3 during the week to raise the $350 bond, so he has the full support of the staff who just hope he polls enough votes to get their money back!

He believes the Labor candidate, Christopher Hayes, is the one to beat.

“Chris is a loyal listener, but the gloves are off and I will be playing the man not the ball.”

Lees has also acknowledged the other ‘novelty’ candidates from the Greens and One Nation.

“I will be making a myriad of promises I don’t intend to keep over the coming weeks. I will not be sending my proposals to Treasury for costing.”
