Radio still top for in-car audio – The Infinite Dial

AM/FM radio is still the leading preference for in-car audio in the USA according to the latest Infinite Dial survey.
 
In responses from participants aged 18 and up who have driven or ridden in a car in the past month, 81% said they have used AM/FM radio in a vehicle with Online radio getting a 28% share.
 
Digitally owned music (45%) and CD players (43%) were closest to radio consumption.


 
Radio’s biggest battle could be with in-dash infotainment systems with ownership of these reaching 19%, up by 4% from last year and listening to in-car audio through a cell phone appears to have peaked, dropping slightly to 41% in 2019 from 42% last year.
 
Podcast consumption is up to 26%, though as the choice as the most frequently used audio source Podcasts have only moved from 3% to 4%.
 
Radio, as the choice of most frequently used audio source, dropped to 52% down from 57% 2 years ago.


Meanwhile at home, Smart Speaker ownership has grown to 23%, up from 18% last year, to an estimated 65 million units with a mean average of 2 speakers per home. Amazon Alexa (16%) still leads Google Home (7%), Sonos One (3%) and Apple HomePod (2%)

Smartphone ownership, while still growing by 1%, appears to be approaching a peak, now at 84% of the population aged 12+.
