Radio Training Institute closes its doors

‘We launched Australian radio’s brightest new talent.’

The final graduation ceremony for the Radio Training Institute (graduates pictured below) on Tuesday at Media House – the home of 3AW – marked the end of the ACE Radio Network-owned institute based in South Melbourne, which has trained hundreds of graduates over more than 30 years.

The decision to close was announced in February, with ACE CEO Mark Taylor saying “In a family company such as ours, and one that encourages learning and excellence, a decision like this is not taken lightly.

“Unfortunately, it reflects the dynamic media landscape we find ourselves in, and the changing needs of radio stations, when it comes to future staffing requirements.”

Following the closure of RTI, those interested in exploring a career in radio will be offered a traineeship within the ACE Network. Chosen candidates will be assigned to one of the various stations within ACE, and learn skills on the job.

Taylor said “We already have two trainees at different stations, with the plan to increase the intake to several more, at any one time. We think a ‘hands-on’ environment will continue our tradition of developing well rounded employees, who are valuable assets to any radio station.”

Established in 1984 as the Melbourne Radio School, RTI will close its classrooms and studios tomorrow for the final time.
