Residents back 8CCC

About 70 Alice Springs residents met last night and voted to keep community radio station 8CCC on the air.

The Alice Springs community radio station operates out of Charles Darwin University (CDU), which has clashed with station management over content and how the station is run.

Meredith Campbell from 8CCC says the station could be forced to close because CDU has withdrawn its support for the station’s licence.

Campbell said that the residents were unanimous that the station’s programing should stay local.

“That is ultimately our aim, to continue really operating as we have done in the format that we have done, with the management arrangement that we have had for the best part of 25 years,” she told radioinfo.

8CCC management says it is prepared to negotiate with CDU over the way the station is run.

“We don’t want to receive just an edict from Darwin today, ‘this is how you should operate from now on’. We’d rather that the relationship was more cooperative”, Campbell added.

CDU claims it was only told of the meeting yesterday morning and was not able to fly the relevant person from Darwin to Alice Springs on such short notice.
