Robbie Buck the next to depart ABC Radio Sydney

Another long time ABC Radio talent is leaving with Robbie Buck announcing he won’t return to ABC Radio Sydney next year.

After presenting the whole program with only a few hints at a change, Buck told listeners in the final minutes of his Songs & Stories show on Sunday night of his decision to step back from full time role saying:

“I have been here over 28 years as a constant employee, and it’s been such a privilege to have been a part of this organisation.

“I am hoping to still have a toe in the water here on the airwaves, and so I’m hoping to pop up from time to time, but it just seems like it’s the right time for me to step back…

“There are some decisions that aren’t great, and there are some good decisions, and all that sort of stuff. I’m not going to comment on that right now, but I do want you to know that your support of the ABC, I think, is absolutely critical, and it’s probably the most critical time ever to have your support, so thank you for that.”

He thanked his producers, supporters and guests over the many years and programs he has hosted. He also thanked his family and the audience, before playing David Bowie’s Changes.

Buck spent 13 years on triple j leaving for ABC Radio National when he realised he was too old for the music.  He later hosted ABC Radio Sydney breakfast show for 8 years, four with Wendy Harmer.

Buck joins ABC Radio Sydney Drive host Richard Glover, Mornings Sarah Macdonald and Simon Marnie on the weekend who all have now departed the station. Sarah Macdonald hasn’t been on Mornings since she announced on air that her contract was not renewed.

No announcement has been made yet on Sarah’s replacement, with some media publications speculating that Hamish Macdonald might be in contention. Perhaps Michael Rowland is a possibility for a radio role, after announcing his departure yesterday from ABC News Breakfast after 15 years. He made clear that an extended break from punishing early hours is needed, until (at this point in time) mid next year. But, mornings could work.

Michael Rowland’s last day is Friday December 13. Robbie Buck wrapped up last Sunday.

Meanwhile, ABC Radio Sydney’s new drive presenter Chris Bath has told her instagram followers that she will be working 7 days a week, retaining her weekend newsreading duties at Channel 10, as well as her new drive shift.
