Star Gosford looking for new leader in competitive market

DMG is advertising on the radioinfo jobs pages for a new General Manager at Gosford’s Star 104.5 after the departure of Tony Nielsen at the end of his contract.

DMG Radio’s Cathy O’Connor has told radioinfo the station is a little more than 16 months old. It launched well and generated good business in the market and “continues to trade well,” according to O’Connor.

“We will continue to market our brand to the market place. There is room to develop further,” she says.

The Central Coast is an interesting market. Macquarie Regional RadioWorks’ 2GO has a long heritage, and listeners are still very loyal to the oldest brand in the market. MRRWorks also owns SeaFM, making three local stations in an area that sits between Sydney and Newcastle and can hear most stations from those cities, as well as its local stations.

There are local newspapers in the expanding region to the north of Sydney, which is within commuting distance, thanks to new freeway developments in recent years. But, there is no local television.

O’Connor says advertisers in the area are drawn to radio because they cannot afford the prices for Sydney television, and Newcastle tv stations are not local enough for the parochial Central Coasters.

With so many media outlets in the market, Star has developed “a unique sound,” according to O’Connor.

“The station has a metro feel with a high degree of localism. It reflects the mindset of the market it is in, with a music position somewhere between CHR and Oldies. PD Alex Dean is highly experienced and has led his team to achieve a successful market position so far.”

With the departure of inaugural breakfast co-host, Mechel, to Nova Brisbane, the station has recruited Kim Czosnek to join Todd Widdicombe in the breakfast team.

The new GM will be required to “achieve success through growth of the business and be able to negotiate the challenges that exist in a fast paced environment, whilst displaying exceptional leadership through promoting a culture of innovation, creativity, teamwork and outstanding customer service.”
