Survey 3 – “The Settler” – lands this morning

Survey 3 results here.

Not all surveys are created equal. Some carry more importance than others.

The last survey of the year, for example, is important because a station must live with the results for a whole three months. Good if you’re up. Bad if you’re down.

Conversely, the first Survey of the year is important because there hasn’t been one for three months.

Of course, the most important survey of them all is always the next one.

Survey 3, though, is acknowledged as “The Settler” in some circles because by then metro life has settled into a post-summer rhythm and audience trends are beginning to establish themselves.

If you’re looking for stability, Melbourne’s not where it’s at – unless you’re 3AW or GOLD 104.3. They were the only two stations in double figures in the market in Survey 2 and command 28 percent of the audience between them. Just when things were starting to settle, in what’s been the nation’s most COVID-affected market, it’s in lockdown again. How will that affect radio this time? We’ll find out in that all important “next” survey. But tomorrow, things are just as likely to stay the same.

Sydney, on the other hand, looks more stable. The pre-COVID order seems to have re-established itself with AM stations 2GB and a resurgent ABC in first and second place. Then comes smoothfm, KIIS and WSFM jockeying for position. Has 2Day-FM made any inroads with its new line-up? We’ll find out tomorrow.

With just 1.1 share points separating 1st and 5th in Brisbane, who will take the lead in Brisbane is anyone’s guess. And just to prove, “It’s all about the content, stupid,” will the venerable 1323CRUISE which currently holds down second spot overall in Adelaide (#1 AM) go up or down?

And then for a little added excitement, there’s Perth with Nova, Mix94.5 and 96FM in pitched battle for market supremacy.

Survey 3, “The Settler?” Maybe “next” time.
