Survey 5 results: 2UE, ABC774, 4MMM, SAFM, Mix 94.5 increase

The results of the 5th capital city survey for 2009 have being released. 2UE had the biggest gain in Sydney and ABC774 scored the biggest rise in Melbourne. Nova is back on top in Brisbane, 5AA is again the leader in Adelaide after ABC891 lost its number one spot. Triple M Brisbane and SAFM scored the biggest gains in their markets. In Perth 6PR suffered a big drop while Mix 94.5 had the highest gain.

The survey was conducted by Nielsen Media for Commercial Radio Australia during the period Sun May 10 – Sat June 13 and Sun Jun 28 – Sat Aug 1, 2009.

The summaries on the right give overall figures for all people 10+, 5:30 am – 12 Midnight, Monday to Sunday.

SYDNEY

2UE had the biggest gain in Sydney, up 1.3 share points overall to 7.2%. Rival talk stations 2GB and ABC702 both dropped, 2GB down 0.9 and ABC702 down 1.6 overall. 2UE’s gain came through an increase in the over 55 audience, with strong increases in mornings, drive, evenings and weekends.

2GB still retains the top spot in the market, with 13.7% overall, with 2Day FM in second place with 10.7%, down by 0.1 share points. The controversial lie detector incident happened in the last few days of this ratings period, but any audience movement as a result of it would not be expected to show up until the next survey.

ABC702 retains third place with 9.0%, and Nova is in fourth place with a healthy rise of 1.0 share points bringing it to 8.2%.

Triple M fell by 0.7, ABC Classic FM was down 1.5, and other stations increased slightly.

2Day won all young demographics 10-39, ahead of Nova. WSFM won the 40-54 demographic and 2GB won 55+.

2GB continues to have Sydney’s top breakfast show with Alan Jones, while 2Day’s Kyle and Jackie O are the next highest rated show in the breakfast timeslot. 2GB also won mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends. 2Day’s Hamish and Andy show was the only program keeping 2GB from a clean sweep of all timeslots, winning drive.

MELBOURNE

ABC774 gained most in Melbourne this survey, up 1.1 share points to 14.1%, scoring second place behind 3AW, which was steady at 16.8%. ABC774’s rose slightly was across all demographics over 25, with gains in weekends, plus afternoons, drive and evenings.

Gold FM suffered the biggest drop tis survey, down 1.2 share points to 5.5%. Other movement was small, with Nova, Vega and Radio National gaining slightly and other stations slipping fractionally.

Fox FM is in third place with 13.6%, then there is a long way between the top three and the rest of the pack, with Nova in fourth place on 7.9%, Gold fifth with 5.5%, Vega sixth on 5.1% and other stations scoring below 5% of the market.

The Vega breakfast show is now leading Gold FM in that timeslot. Ironically, Pete and Myf’s, now axed, Triple M brekfast show had the biggest increase in the breakfast timeslot.

Fox FM won the 10-39 demographics. 40-54s and 55+ was won by 3AW.

3AW won the breakfast timeslot ahead of ABC774. 3AW also won mornings, Fox won afternoons and drive, 3AW won evenings and weekends.

BRISBANE

Nova has regained top spot in Brisbane, up 0.6 to 12.4%, while former leader B105 dropped 0.5 to 11.8%, putting the station now in second place.

Third placed 97.3 gained 0.4 to 11.6% with Triple M just behind in fourth place.

Triple M had the biggest rise in the market, up 1.0 share points to 11.3%. Triple M gained listeners in 18-39 and over 55s, with mornings, afternoons and evenings increasing most for the station.

4BC and ABC Classic FM rose slightly while other stations slipped slightly.

B105 won 10-17s, Nova won 18-39s, 97.3 won the 40-54 demographic and 4BC won 55+.

Nova and ABC612 tied for top spot in the breakfast timeslot. Triple M won mornings and afternoons, B105 won drive and evenings. 97.3 won weekends.

ADELAIDE

ABC891 lost its grip on the Adelaide market’s top spot to 5AA, dropping 1.2 share points to 12.8% and moving into third place. The ABC local radio station lost most listeners in the breakfast, evenings and weekend timeslots.

Previous leader 5AA regained first place with a rise of 0.7 share points to 14.4%. SAFM scored the biggest gain in the survey, up 1.8 to 14.3%, in second place.

Cruise increased by 0.4 and Radio National was up by 0.7. NewsRadio was down 0.9 and other stations slipped slightly.

SAFM won the 10-17 age group, Nova won 18-24s, SAFM won 25-54s, and 5AA won the over 55s.

5AA had the top breakfast show in the market, Mix 102.3 won mornings, SAFM won afternoons and drive, 5AA won evenings and weekends.

PERTH

6PR took a big hit in Perth, dropping 2.2 share points overall to 8.8%. The station lost a large amount of evening listeners and dropped in all shifts across the day and on weekends.

Market leader Mix 94.5 gained 1.4 share points, consolidating its hold on the top spot, ahead of second placed 96fm, up 0.9 to 12.6% and third placed 92.9, which lost 1.0 share points to score 12.2% this survey.

ABC720 is in fourth place with a gain of 0.6, to 10.5%. Radio National slipped fractionally, Triple J had a good increase of 1.4 share points to 7.7%, and other ABC stations gained slightly.

6IX dropped by 0.5 to 4.8% Nova was down 0.7 to 9.5%.

92.9 dominated the 10-17 demographic and also won 18-24s. Triple J won 25-39s with a big increase in its share of that age group. Mix 94.5 won 40-54s and ABC720 won 55+.

Mix 94.5 won breakfast ahead of ABC720. Mix also won mornings and afternoons. 92.9 won drive with Hamish and Andy, another clean sweep for the drive team right around the country. ABC720 won evenings and Mix won weekends.

VEGA 91.5 FM UP ACROSS THE BOARD

vega 91.5fm reached an overall 5.1% share, the station’s best result to date, as well as increases in breakfast, mornings, afternoons, drive and evenings according to the latest radio results.

With an increase of 32,000 listeners, Dicko, Dave and Chrissie is the Number 3 FM breakfast show, increasing to an all time high of 4.8%. vega 91.5fm breakfast passed Gold FM’s Grubby and Dee Dee for the first time.

vega 91.5fm is Number 1 At Work, with listeners spending 14.52 hours a week with the station.

vega 91.5fm also had strong results in the 40-54 demographic (9%), ahead of Gold FM (8.4%), Mix FM (5.2%) and Triple M (4.4%).

vega 91.5fm General Manager Sam Thompson said, “This is another consistently strong result for vega 91.5fm. The hard work the entire team is putting in as well as playing all the rock legends is resonating with listeners.”

Drive with Claire Marshall … 5.1% (up from 4.5%) – leading Triple M (4.4) & Mix (4.6)

40-54 … 9.0% (up from 8.1%) – No 2 FM

vega 91.5fm has asked listeners to create their Ultimate Fantasy Concert, seven hours of the best live music, which can be heard this Saturday from midday.


Brisbane

B105 is the number two station in Brisbane following today’s radio ratings holding an 11.8 per cent share. Leading the charge is drive team Hamish and Andy. Not only did they ‘Get Inked by Pink’ but their leadership continued with a share of 18.9 per cent, five points clear of their nearest competitor. Hot30 Countdown at nights retained their number one position with 14.1 per cent.

Cage Crusaders helps to deliver the goods for Triple M Brisbane with The Cage achieving the highest increase in Breakfast in today’s radio ratings. The 0.8 per cent share rise sees The Cage hold an 11.6 per cent share and number two FM Breakfast show.

Sydney

Sydney’s 2Day FM continues to dominate the FM market as the number one FM station. Gaining over 50,000 listeners to hold a cume audience of over one million listeners, 2Day FM is still the number one FM station across the workday, in Breakfast and Drive. Kyle and Jackie O hold a 12.0 per cent share maintaining their number one FM Breakfast position and gained 42,000 new listeners. Hamish and Andy continue to dominate the Drive shift with a huge 17.2 per cent share and gained 23,000 listeners.

Sydney’s Triple M is the number five FM station following today’s radio ratings and holds the number four Breakfast position. Triple M nights saw an increase of 0.7 points.

Melbourne

Hamish & Andy continue to increase their hold on the number one drive position, and along the way get inked with pink! And they’re not the only ones leading the charge – Matt & Jo also keep their number one slot in FM breakfast. Together these marquee shows ensure that Fox maintains its lead as Melbourne’s number one FM radio station, with a 5.7 point lead on its nearest FM competitor.

Triple M begins its re-emergence as a legend of Melbourne’s rock stations with a slight increase this survey across all key sessions and looks forward to further success with a pending announcement regarding an exciting new breakfast solution. For now the station continues to ‘Rock Football’, dominating the under 55 segment.

Adelaide

SAFM enjoys the ride to number 1 FM position in today’s radio ratings with the biggest increase of any station overall with 1.8 share percentage lift. Overall, every session increased it’s share with Rabbit, Amber and Cosi’s Breakfast show number 1 on 12.7 share and Hamish and Andy increasing another 2.5 points taking their lead to 20.8.

Triple M Adelaide has 234,000 listeners each week. Wider variety music resulted in a solid result for workday listening. Adelaide’s #1 footy call for all people under 55. Over 60,000 UBs for the month with a 13% increase. Due to the success of last year’s “Who Wants to Date My Dad”, Kym, Ali & Dzelde embarked on a new venture … combining “Who Wants to Date My Mum” with a massive singles party.

Perth

Hamish & Andy continue to increase their hold on the number one drive position, and along the way get inked with pink! Overall, the station leads the charge under 40 and has the biggest cume with 464,000 listeners in Perth. Number one Under 40. Number one cumulative audience with 464,000 listeners. Number one Drive show.

Looks like Mix 94.5 can enjoy their 78th consecutive survey win again today. Contributing to this strong win has been The Big Couch’s Clairsy, Shane and Lisa Fernandez when for the past survey they searched Perth to find the best celebrity lookalikes. Mix 94.5 marquee breakfast show, Botica’s Bunch, also enjoyed a great survey with another #1 breakfast position win.
