The Hit Network’s Jess & Ducko have uncovered a wonderful love story that has captured the hearts of Newcastle listeners after Nick “Ducko” Allen-Ducat overheard a man getting fitted for a wedding suit at his tailor.

That gentleman was in his 80s. When Ducko was telling Jess (Farchione) about it on air a caller rang in to say:

“That’s my grandparents you’re talking about!”

The caller said that George, 85, preparing to marry Anne, 77. Anne had been married to George’s brother, Bert, for 56 years before he sadly passed away. His dying wish was for George to “take care of Anne.” George honoured that wish in the most unexpected way – by proposing to her on Valentine’s Day.

Nick and Jess got to meet George and Anne (main image), with the pair admitting that the romance had given them a “new lease on life.”

Anne: “She (granddaughter, Ashley) said, ‘Nan, you’re wedding is trending on 106.9!’ I said, ‘Is this good?’

I was married to George’s brother, Bert. We were married for 56 years and had four children. George was in our lives on and off during that time and spent a bit of time with us as a family. He went off and got engaged a couple of times, did his own thing. But when Bert was on his deathbed he said to George, ‘Will you look after Anne for me?’”

Ducko: “Oh, he said it to you?”

George: “Anne had to go to the little girl’s room, and he beckoned me over, he couldn’t talk very loud, and he said, ‘Will you do me a favour?’, I said ‘Anything at all’, and he said, ‘Would you make sure Anne’s okay?’”

Jess: “Wow, I just got goosebumps.”

Ducko: “Were there any attractions before then?”

George: “Not really… Anne was my brother’s wife. That’s all I thought.”

Ducko: “Did it take you by surprise [Anne]?”

Anne: “It did. Especially when he proposed on Valentine’s Day. I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to think on this for a little while!’ But I thought, why not?”

Jess: “How was it telling the family?”

Anne: “They’ve loved him [George] all their life, he’s been their favourite uncle all their life, so it was no problem. One of them said, ‘Like we didn’t see that coming!’”

To celebrate, Jess & Ducko organised for Anne and George to enjoy a honeymoon in the Hunter Valley and may have even scored an invite to Anne and George’s wedding.
