Tim Webster is officially 2SM’s new breakfast presenter as of today.
radioinfo can confirm that Webster has agreed to take on the show after conversations with 2SM manager Graham Miles and owner George Caralis. The shift was vacated by Ron Wilson last week.
We spoke to Tim Webster after his first shift:
Is this a fill in gig, or are you 2SM’s new full time breakfast host?
It’s full time as of today, June 30.
How will it feel getting up at breakfast hours again?
I’m really a morning person, my most recent full time gig on radio was at 2CH, which I loved.
It’ll be nice to have a regular gig in the hours I prefer, it’s when the City is buzzing. It’s our challenge to buzz along with it.
You did your last shift on the ABC last week and started at 2SM today. Are you a glutton for punishment or just love radio?
Oh, I love radio!
It really gives me the same buzz it always has and at the ABC they were very grateful they had someone who could fill in just about anywhere.
Do you think you will bring some of the audience with you from 702, as well as other fans from your previous stations?
I’ve already had a couple of very nice messages from loyal listeners from as far back as 2CH. Of course this is news/ talk not music, but all those various shifts on the ABC have made me match fit for this gig. So, it’ll be the TW version of News and Talk.
What are your plans for 2SM breakfast? How will you shape it to reflect your personality? How much will music be part of it, and how much will be talk.
It’s still gotta be fun, I couldn’t do it any other way.
It’s interesting you know… it was the birthday of Andy Scott, one of the guitarists from The Sweet today.. he was 76 and the only remaining member. We played Ballroom Blitz.. the listeners loved it. Everyone loves music.
What’s the difference between an ABC audience and a commercial radio audience?
It’s surprising how similar audiences can be and the same positive things you do on the air resonate in the same way on the ABC.
There are rusted-on ABC listeners who just don’t like the ads, but, as for topics, music and interest there’s plenty of similarities.
Will the station be doing any promotion of you to let the audience know where you are now?
Yes, there’s promos running now and after some of the sensibilities involved we are good to go. I’ve spoken to my old friend and colleague Ron Wilson and we’re all good. It’s the business we’re in and we understand how it works.
Tim Webster is a Sydney Roosters fan, as you can see from the main picture. He is a Life Member of the club and has hosted the club’s annual awards night on multiple occasions. He was selected to trial for Easts Jersey Flegg side, but got badly injured. He later played 3 seasons with Bondi United.
Webster was the last breakfast presenter on 2CH, and since that station went off air in June 2022, he has been filling in on various shifts at 702 ABC Radio Sydney, including on Overnights and in Afternoons, while James Valentine was on sick leave for his cancer treatment.
