Townsville Radio On Ya Bike

4TTT Townsville held a bike ride from Townsville to Cairns last week and raised $140 000 for the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia.

Breakfast personality Barry “Hammo” Hamilton has been in training for months for the ride but recently spent 2 weeks in hospital, almost ruling him out of the ride. But true to his word at 7.30 last Thursday morning, Hamilton joined 213 other riders and crew to do the ride of his life.

Money was going round that he wouldn’t be able to finish the ride let alone conquer the high Cardwell Range, but Hammo stumped them all by pushing himself and achieving what was just about considered the impossible.

Outside broadcasts were mounted from Ingham, Innisfail and from the Pier Shopping Centre, Cairns on Saturday at noon. To the sounds of Alex Lloyd’s ‘Amazing’, the 213 riders and crew rode into the Pier at 2pm to a massive standing ovation.

Hamilton dropped his bike and joined Program Director Stephan Kent on the live broadcast immediately saying, “I don’t think I will sit down for a week” and “I need a drink and a long hot bath”.
