The Australian newspaper got the figures wrong about triple j in its reporting of ABC Radio’s strategic review. The ABC youth network has told radioinfo it is “in no way” considering imitating BBC Radio 1 and challenges audience statistics published in The Australian, which we also quoted.
Triple j Marketing Manager Ruby Grennan has told radioinfo:
1. Triple j and ABC Radio are in no way considering changing triple j into a Radio 1 style service or playing more commercial music. These assertions are wholly untrue.
2. The average age of triple j’s audience is on par with our commercial radio counterparts: our audience’s average age is 31, compared to 29 for Nova and 30 for Austereo networks (based on the first 2 survey results for 2010).
3. Based on the first two survey results for 2010, triple j has more teenagers than over 40s, with 4.0% of the 10-17 audience, compared to 3.3% 40-54s.
Grennan says it is important “that correct and accurate figures are distributed about triple j.” The figures support her case:
Average Age, 5 City Metro, Neilsen Media
Survey 1 & 2 2010, Mon-Sun 5.30am-12mn
triple j 31
