Triple M still rocks Newcastle, but NEWFM makes a move

Triple M Newcastle remains at the top in the latest GfK survey for the Hunter, but NEWFM has seen some encouraging signs.

NEWFM was the biggest winner, gaining 1.7 to move to 10.6 overall, while the ABC Newcastle dropped 3.0 to fall to 8.9.

2HD also had a small gain of 1.1 (7.8) and Hit106.9 was also up a little, now 12.5 from 11.8.

Triple M is still the runaway leader, despite a small loss of 0.8, they still have 17.7 overall, and their breakfast team of Tanya & Steve still dominate the early part of the day with 20.1.

The hit to the ABC Newcastle could be seen as locals wanting information from their local station about the COVID-19 crisis.

What is also interesting about this survey is that the gap, or the category that would consist of “other” stations has grown from 22.5 to 25.3, meaning that 1 in 4 listeners in Newcastle don’t listen to any of the published stations in the survey.

This is especially evident in the 55-64 demographic where “other” sits at 42.2 (up 4.3) and 65+ now at 43.0 (up 9.3)
