Triple M’s Leisel Jones gets a Brisbane street (properly) named after her

2023 Australian Commercial Radio Awards Best New Talent finalist Leisel Jones OAM, who is also a four time Olympian, three-time Olympic Gold Medalist, has seven World Championships titles, 10 Commonwealth Games gold medals and held 14 individual world records, has had a Brisbane Street named fully in her honour.

But the well-deserved accolade wasn’t without some drama.

One afternoon, on Triple M’s The Rush Hour with Leisel Jones, Liam and Dobbo, a caller from Deception Bay called Paul said there was a Leisel Drive in the Brisbane suburb of Rothwell named after Jones, but no one had ever told her, and it’s not even her full name!

Liam and Dobbo then fronted Moreton Bay Shire Council to have the road’s name changed to Leisel Jones Drive, only to have the meeting declined because the speaker has to be a resident of the Moreton Bay Shire to address the Council.

So Leisel, Liam and Dobbo took to the streets of the Moreton Bay Shire, petitioning residents.

The people agreed.

And so the Council agreed.

A mighty fine party ensued, with a street motorcade, and an officially renamed Leisel Jones Drive.
