Clarke Hansen died last Thursday April 30, at the age of 84. He was a broadcaster across many sports, but best known for his AFL coverage which saw him inducted into the Melbourne Cricket Ground Media Hall of Fame in 2011.
Clarke was one of the original News Readers for NRN Channel 10 in Coffs Harbour when it commenced broadcasting in January 1965. In 1967 he joined the ABC in Victoria, covering the tennis, Olympic Games and the AFL and was heard there for more than three decades.
Clarke is the father of Ashley Hansen, who played AFL professionally for the West Coast Eagles and is currently the senior assistant coach at Carlton. Ash too spent two years in commentary with the ABC in WA.
Alongside the main image of the ABC Sport TV fan card of Clarke that you can purchase via eBay, Radioinfo also found this lovelyAge article of the day that Clarke ran into his media colleague and mate Eddie McGuire, then the President of Collingwood, on the day that Ash and West Coast were to play the Pies. Clarke had some insider information which he chose not to disclose.
