Vale Dennis Cometti

Dennis Cometti – one of the greats of Australian sports broadcasting – has died at the age of 76.

Known for his quirky one-liners – including ‘centimetre perfect’ – the legendary footy caller joined ABC Radio Perth in 1972, working at the national broadcaster until 1985.

During his ABC radio tenure, he coached West Perth for three seasons from 1982 to 1984.

Joining with Channel 7 in 1986, he called VFL and AFL football games and also served as Seven News Perth’s main sports anchor.

So popular was his calling style, his signature sayings became part of footy folklore – widely referred to as ‘Cometti-isms.

Cometti worked across several radio stations, including 3AW and Triple M.

His last Grand Final radio call was Melbourne’s 2021 Grand Final win over the Bulldogs.
