Vale Jillian Hocking

Former ABC Journalist and world renowned journalism trainer Jillian Hocking has passed away after 2 years struggling with the disease glioblastoma.

Jillian worked as a journalist at ABC Radio National, trained journalists at SBS, and was Head of Radio Broadcasting for the United Nations in Afghanistan.

She also trained journalists in eastern Europe and the Arab world, before returning to become a highly regarded journalism academic in Melbourne.

Friend and colleague Siobhan McHugh posted on her facebook page, where the news was announced, reflecting the views of her many friends:

Desperately sad. Jillian was loving and so very loved. She was an inspiration in how to live a passionate, principled, kind and deeply committed life, as a journalist, educator and above all as a wonderful human being. A privilege to have known her. “Ni bheidh a leitheid ann aris”, as we say in Ireland. (“We will not see her like again”). Sincere condolences to Bruce and family.

Her many friends and trainees from around the world posted condolences on her facebook page.
