Vale Reg James

Reg James, who started work as the office boy and ended up as General Manager of Grace Gibson Productions passed away peacefully last night at 86, surrounded by his family.

As a child, he loved sitting around the radio listening to the live shows and serials, so when he scored a job at the newly formed Grace Gibson Productions in 1946, he was in seventh heaven. He fondly recalled that Miss Gibson gave him the job because he was the tallest applicant, and she figured he’d be able to carry more transcription discs to the post office and railway.

In paying tribute to Reg, current owner of Grace Gibson Productions Bruce Ferrier stated “To a couple of generations of us in radio, Reg James really WAS Grace Gibson, as it was Reg we all dealt with in buying our radio features and serials, from ‘Yes What’ and ‘Chickenman’ to ‘The Castlereagh Line’. He was a much loved friend to all in the industry.”

“Reg remained the company’s Honorary Archivist right to the end. His knowledge of who starred in what serial, and which stations broadcast them was encyclopediac. He only recently co-authored a book on his life in radio titled “Yes, Miss Gibson” and had just put the finishing touches on his own life story which is about to hit the printers. A great friend who will be sorely missed.”, Ferrier continued.

A wonderful family man, Reg delighted in entertaining his grandchildren in his retirement.

No details on funeral arrangements are yet available.
