Long serving radio general manager Stephen Robinson, known to his colleagues & many friends as Steve or Robbo, sadly passed away last Wednesday August 14th.
Prior to joining the radio industry Steve was conscripted into National Service and in doing so served his country with a tour of duty in Vietnam as a member of 8RAR. When he returned to his hometown of Melbourne he undertook voice and radio training at the Lee Murray Radio School which led him to his first on air role.
In the early 70’s Steve began his successful 40 plus year radio career starting on air at 2LM Lismore and later becoming GM. After several successful years there and enjoying the nearby lifestyle of Nimbin (as Robbo would say “well it was the 70’s”) he broadened his managerial experience as GM of 3BO Bendigo, 3MP Melbourne which Steve looked after when they were the No.1 music station, KA-FM Adelaide, K Rock/BAY FM Geelong,3UL Warragul, 3SR/SUN FM Shepparton & then back to 3MP. Another highlight of Steve’s many achievements was when he was appointed Chief Operating Officer of the Wesgo radio network.
His media career ironically concluded not in radio but in television when he was GM of Southern Cross TV’s Market Share program, after which he retired to the Mornington Peninsula.
Steve is survived by his wife Ann who many will remember as one half of the long running successful breakfast duo of Andrew & Ann featuring Andrew McLaren & Ann Gilding on 3MP & MAGIC in Melbourne.
A funeral service for Steve Robinson will be held at Tobin Bros. Mt Martha Victoria on Friday September 6th at 2:00pm.
With thanks to Ian Toull for the above. He said, “RIP Robbo….he was a passionate radio person and a great bloke who will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.”
