Vale Tony Charlton

The great broadcaster has succumbed to bowel cancer, aged 83. Radio, television and the AFL family all paid tribute to one of the great sports broadcasters of an era. Tony Charlton started his career in 1952 at 3AW, moving to television where he broadcast from the Olympics and went on to host The Tony Charlton Football Show.

At one point, Charlton presented more than 300 two-minute radio vignettes on life in Victoria which aired in the USA on the NBC radio program Monitor.

Speaking on 3AW, Neil Mitchell said Charlton was a great Australian.

“He was one of the real gentlemen of the media. The overwhelming feeling I have about Tony was his decency. He was a compassionate, caring man.”
