West Australian to follow in footsteps of broadcast legend

In April this year, the ABC announced three ‘Cammo’ commemorations, one of which included a three-month paid radio internship for a regionally-based West Australian to work in the ABC Radio Perth station.

Albany local Katie McAllister has been appointed the inaugural Eoin Cameron Memorial Internship. Katie grew up in Cameron’s hometown and previously interned for ABC Great Southern Radio and produced her own program on Albany Community Radio before commencing her Bachelor of Arts at UWA.

ABC Radio Perth manager, Sarah Knight commented she had never met someone so enthusiastic.

“Katie shows a true passion for radio and I think will be a lively addition to our Perth team.”

Despite not being a typical listener of the late veteran broadcaster, Katie is well aware of the man who many felt were part of their daily lives.

“It’s an incredible honour to be the recipient of the Eoin Cameron Memorial internship. I was too young to listen to Cammo but speaking to friends and family who did, it is a privilege to learn the craft of radio in light of a man who was master of it. ABC Radio has always been part of life growing up in Albany and I’ve always found it inspirational how it connects the community.”

Katie McAllister will begin her internship on the Afternoons program working alongside Brad McCahon before rotating on different programs and the newsroom.

She commences her internship at ABC Radio Perth on 7th September.

Eoin Cameron died last year from a suspected heart attack while on a holiday in Albany.

His career spanned 47 years, before he retired from ABC 720
