Wollongong radio icon retires

Well known Wollongong Radio Personality, Steve Parsons has announced his retirement from the industry after 39 years.

“Parso” began his career as an office boy at 2GB in 1967 before his first on air role at 2PK Parkes as a 16 year old in 1968.

He first went to 2WL Wollongong in 1970 to do nights but shortly afterwards moved onto breakfast.

In 1972 he was lured to 2GB Sydney as breakfast host and while there did voice over work on TV for TCN 9 and the Grundy organisation.

He returned to 2WL breakfast in 1975 and was unbeaten in every survey for 20 years.

During that time he broadcast his show from London, Dublin, Beijing, Hong Kong, Vancouver, New York, Disneyland and every Australian capital city.

In 1988 he presented breakfast for a week on KHOW 63 in Denver Colorado as a guest host.

For the last 5 years Parso has been Wave FM’s Program Manager.

During the 90’s he also worked as a news and sports presenter for Prime TV Wollongong and had his own weekly newspaper column for many years.

Parso is married with 4 adult children and one grandchild. He turns 55 later this year and intends to spend a lot more time on the golf course.

He hopes to do some part time work and pursue his Civil Celebrant aspirations after a few months of doing nothing.

He told radioinfo he has his eyes on a new set of golf clubs.
