Neil Mitchell and new podcast join the ACE Radio network

When Neil Mitchell wrapped up at 3AW at the end of 2023, he concurrently released an episode of his podcast, Neil Mitchell Asks Why alongside friends and colleagues Heidi Murphy and Tony Jones. The episode was largely about what it takes to do talk radio.

Heidi asked if anyone really knew Neil. Across his three decades with 3AW he’d carefully separated his personal and professional lives. Neil replied that he was exactly what Steve Price called him once, boring. And he liked being boring. Then, after reflection on the ongoing pressure from one radio survey result to the next he said:

“What matters from the moment you get off air is tomorrow. And there’s no more tomorrows.”

Neil’s podcast continued through 2024 and 2025 with Nine Audio, and was a finalist in this year’s inaugural Australian Audio Awards. There hasn’t been a new episode however since the end of 2025 and Nine’s audio arm was purchased by the Laundy family and officially became Tapt Media in May.

With little fanfare, typical of Neil, he has launched a new radio show and podcast Mitchell Unlimited, with the ACE Radio Network. The first episode is available now, Neil’s son Cameron joins him, and you can also listen across the ACE Radio network on a Sunday morning from 9-10am.

The first episode looks at the Commonwealth Games and the pair debate boomers versus millennials.

For fans of Food Bytes, hosted by Radio Today editor Sarah Patterson and husband Kevin Hillier, which formerly aired at that time, a show featuring celebrity guests talking about the meaning of food and cooking on their lives, it has been shifted back to 5-6am on a Sunday, and can also be found wherever you listen to your podcasts.

Jen Seyderhelm is a writer, editor and podcaster.
