Stories from Berry Street podcast shares the realities of child protection work

The new podcast Stories from Berry Street will provide insights into the realities of working in child protection and shine a light on issues impacting children and families.

Launching on August 14 the podcast is hosted by Richelle Hunt, presenter of the ABC’s Conversation Hour, with commentary from a range of leading experts.

Berry Street CEO Jenny McNaughton said:

“Our podcast topics look at the impacts of trauma, violence and neglect at a time when we’re seeing more children being removed from home than ever before, more young people disengaging from school and the scourge of family violence becoming ever more prevalent.

It’s important people hear and learn about social disadvantage and how these issues impact our entire community, not just the people directly experiencing them.

As well as examining the issues, we’ll be focusing on the positive impacts of our world-leading, evidence-based programs, the way we strive to keep children, young people and families safe, and discussing new and innovative solutions.

By sharing our positive vision of what’s possible if people get the correct support when they need it and by breaking inter-generational cycles of disadvantage, we want to offer a sense of hope.”

Richelle Hunt said:

“I’ve been blown away by the incredible work Berry Street is doing to address the rising tide of harm and violence. This podcast examines some really tricky issues and explores what we as a community can do to help.”

The topics for the eight episodes are:

1. The child protection system, a discussion with Jenny McNaughton

2. Healing trauma

3. Family violence

4. Providing safe homes

5. Trauma-informed education

6. Early intervention

7. Childhood neglect

8. Reimagining the system with Professionalised Individual Care
