It has been quite the fortnight of on air explosions, accusations and repercussions. Now former spin bowler Stuart MacGill has added to the mix, taking offence to a discussion topic initiated by co-host Andrew ‘Menners’ Menczel on their Cricket Unfiltered podcast, and then some.
The episode is below. Language warning.
Cricket Unfiltered has been around since 2013 and is Australia’s first and longest-running weekly cricket podcast. Menners hosted by himself, with a selection of high profile guests over the years, up until a month ago when MacGill was announced as a permanent co-host.
It has been a rocky road for McGill post cricket, which he discussed late last year across several episodes of the Howie Games. On joining Cricket Unfiltered, Macgill said of working with Menners:
“More than anything, it’s a good fit — and I get to work with someone I’ve known for a long time and trust as much as I’m ever going to trust anyone.”
MacGill’s outburst in this episode went far beyond reason, and got very personal. Menners told Radioinfo that he is ‘undecided’ at this stage as to what will happen from here.
It is not what the long running podcast stands for to fans either. One said:
“He hasn’t added any value to your show, Menners. Even when he isn’t blowing up, he talks over the top of you. It disjoints your show.”
“Could see exactly this sort of thing coming from a mile away as soon as MacGill came on board.. From the very first episode he was imposing himself on the discussion like it was his podcast and something heated like this always appeared to be just a matter of when.. Menners you need to cut him loose immediately.. The show was actually better before MacGill came into it anyway.”
Uncomfortable and unpleasant listening for sure, and not in the spirit of the game.
