Journalist and former Melbourne radio announcer Dee Dee Dunleavy is launching an investigative true crime podcast The Boy in the Gold Mine examining the disappearance of 12-year-old Terry Floyd in the small Victorian country town of Avoca in 1975.
For five decades, Terry’s younger brother Daryl has been searching for answers, even digging in an abandoned gold mine where he believes Terry’s body was dumped.
Dee Dee has worked in the media for more than 40 years, 37 of them in radio, and is using those journalistic skills to research and write this this nine-part true crime series.
The podcast features former homicide detective Charlie Bezzina, who has been working as a private investigator on this case since 2011 and former lead investigator Ron Iddles as well as witnesses who have never before spoken on the record.
Dee Dee says the podcast aims to uncover the truth about what happened to Terry Floyd:
“I was familiar with Terry’s story, having previously interviewed Daryl on radio, but I was shocked by some of the things I learned in researching this case, and I was left completely frustrated at learning of information that appears to have been overlooked over the years, that could possibly have led police directly to Terry’s killer.”
Charlie Bezzina says he believes “one hundred per cent” that this case can be solved. He is participating in this podcast series to help shine a light on Terry’s case:
“Daryl has gone through this for five decades, and I feel for him. He’s fighting his heart out trying to raise more funds to finish the search in that mineshaft, because he believes – and I support it – that that’s where Terry’s remains are.”
Daryl Floyd has welcomed the audio documentary of Terry’s story, saying:
“This year marks 50 years since I lost my little mate and brother Terry on the 28th of June, and not a day goes by that I don’t think of him.
My biggest heartbreak is that my parents passed away without ever knowing what happened to their son—and through this podcast, I hope people understand the lifelong trauma, grief, and the fight families go through when someone they love disappears.”
