ABC Eyre Peninsula’s Deane Williams hangs up the headphones

Williams joined the ABC in 2010.

After a media career spanning 55 years, ABC Eyre Peninsula Breakfast presenter, Deane Williams, has announced his retirement.

Williams has been presenting and producing the Breakfast program since 2010, and has also presented on ABC North & West.

Chief of Staff, Petria Ladgrove, says Deane has been a great ABC team member over the past eight years.

“Deane’s storytelling will stay with listeners for years to come. He has a great way with words and is able to coax wonderful and deep stories from characters across the region.”

Deane’s final on air shift will be Friday 29 June and his retirement plans include a return to painting, some travel and eventually a move to Adelaide.

Deane Williams says “I look forward to immersing myself in the creative processes involved in art making. And for inspiration I’m hoping to travel more, to visit friends and family in Europe in particular. There’ll also be time to see more of Australia.

When I came to the Eyre Peninsula with the ABC eight years ago it was like receiving a gift. Presenting radio is something I love to do. And working with colleagues and on-air guests who have made life so interesting. Often fun, sometimes challenging, but always satisfying. I’ve met so many people who are passionate about what they do and are a joy to talk with on radio. Most of all I will miss the many in our audience who love the ABC and have been regular listeners to my program”.

Deane’s career goes far beyond his eight years at ABC Eyre Peninsula.

He began his media career as a studio crew member at Channel 9 Adelaide in 1963, later working in radio at 5AU, then GTS/BKN television and Channel 7 Adelaide operations.

In the 1990s Deane led a team of volunteers in a successful licence bid for Adelaide Christian community radio station 1079 Life.

With a strong interest in the arts, Deane studied visual arts in Adelaide in 1995 and went on to complete a fine arts degree at the University of Tasmania.

ABC Eyre Peninsula is inviting community members to a farewell morning tea for Deane Williams at the ABC’s Port Lincoln Studios, 9.30am – 11am on Thursday the 28th of June to say farewell enjoy tea, coffee and morning tea as well as a studio tour.
