After 80 years in its timeslot, the quarter to eight news on ABC metro and regional stations will be axed, as part of the budget cuts announced today by Managing Director David Anderson.

As part of Open House Melbourne weekend of Saturday 27 - Sunday 28 July, ABC Southbank Centre will be among over 200 significant commercial and civic buildings, private homes, infrastructure and landscape projects to open for the public, demonstrating some of Melbourne’s most progressive historical, contemporary and future-facing ideas in architecture and city-making.

Buildings include The Capital Theatre, Australian Islamic Centre, Carlton Court House, Hawthorn Tram Depot, Myer Mural Hall, State Gymnastic Centre, Victorian Archives Centre and Willsmere.

Trioli to replace Faine on ABC Radio Melbourne

The co-host of ABC NEWS Breakfast, Virginia Trioli, will take over from Jon Faine next year as presenter of the Mornings program on ABC Radio Melbourne.
  
Faine, who has been presenting his show for 23 years, announced in January that this would be his last year on air.
 
Trioli is well-known to ABC audiences having co-presented ABC NEWS Breakfast since 2008 as well as being a regular stand-in host on Q&A.

ABC Radio has launched a voice-activated news service to reach listeners using the new Google Home device, which has just arrived in Australia.

The voice activated Google Home speaker is a bluetooth device combined with a voice-activated assistant, also known as a Conversational User Interface (CUI).

The speaker is designed to be always on and most likely placed in a key position in the home, such as the kitchen or living room.
