100 years of radio and convergent technologies at BroadcastAsia2006

The region’s most established broadcast tradeshow and conference, BroadcastAsia2006, closed on a high note last week, attracting 12,700 visitors from around the region, an increase of over 30% from last year. The event coincided with a conference celebrating 100 years of radio in Singapore called RadioAsia 2006.

The theme of the Broadcast Asia exhibition was Digital: The Journey Forward, which featured 847 exhibiting companies from 47 countries showing technologies such as IPTV, High Definition, Mobile Broadcasting and Video-On-Demand.

The RadioAsia2006 Conference was jointly organised with the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) and the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), providing a platform for “a comprehensive discussion on cutting edge technological, political and economic developments in the radio sector.”

Singapore Exhibition Services’ Chief Executive Stephen Tan has told radioinfo: “The industry is experiencing significant shifts in the way content is handled, which ultimately provide more choice and control for the ever-demanding consumer. Digital technologies that were only talked about in previous years has become a reality on the show floor this year.”

Commenting on the success of the conference, Speaker Ofer Weintraub said: “This event has been very interesting. Technologies are converging and the lines between telecommunications and broadcasting are blurring, and I think that it is good to see this at the show. I have met a lot of people from companies that we are already in business with, as well as new, potential partners and customers.”

The BroadcastAsia2006 International Conference touched on issues pertaining to interactive television, broadcasting to handhelds and alternative content delivery channels, among others. As the line between different technologies continues to blur, mobility is proving to be the driving force behind today’s broadcasting technologies such as IPTV, High-Definition, Mobile Broadcasting and Video – On – Demand.

At the conference, Singaporean company Innoxius Technologies showcased a first-of-its-kind plug-in dongle that turns a PDA into a multi-system mobile digital radio and tv receiver for standards such as DVB-H, DVB-T, T-DMB, DAB and enhanced packet mode DAB standards in various spectrum ranges. The company told organizers it had “many serious buyers” for its products as a result of the exhibit.

BroadcastAsia will return to the Singapore Expo from the 19th to the 22nd of June in 2007.
