Sydney Talk Station 2GB has decided to drop Rugby League weekend coverage and broadcast descriptions of Sydney Swans AFL games. In a surprising, but logical move, the station announced the decision last Friday. Surprising – because Station Owner John Singleton has always been a strong Rugby League supporter. But logical – because the station’s coverage was sounding and rating a poor third to 2UE and 2BL in 1998 and must have been costing the station much more to produce than it was earning. Now that the decision has been made 2GB, with the help of the AFL, will be able to tap into advertisers who do not sponsor rugby league – creating a point of difference from main rivals 2UE and 2BL. NewsRadio in Sydney has been broadcasting AFL games for the past two years and has found a growing interest in the code from Sydneysiders.
