ABC Collinswood turns 50

The eight storey ABC building on North East Road in Collinswood turns 50 this year. It was officially opened in 1974 by then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam with ABC Radio Adelaide, Behind the News and The Country Hour, officially recognised in the Guinness Book of Records as Australia’s longest running radio program, all residing within.

Of course ABC Radio Adelaide existed before then, with ABS Channel 2 as it was known then launching in March 1960, in the same location in Tregenna, a 1913 two-storey mansion that was demolished to make way for the new building. The ABC radio studios then lived in Hindmarsh Square in the Adelaide city centre also moving in in 1974.

The ABC has gone into their archives and put together a reel of historical footage to celebrate the occasion which you can watch here.
