Peter Cundall, considered a National Living Treasure and Tasmanian gardening legend, will have his 90th birthday in April, and to celebrate ABC Radio Hobart is hosting ‘Pete’s Picnic’ at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens on Sunday 2 April.
ABC Radio Hobart’s Weekends program will broadcast live across Tasmania from Pete’s Picnic (#PetesPicnic), as Presenter and long-time Gardening Talkback co-host Chris Wisbey, looks back on some of Cundall’s greatest achievements throughout his career.
There’ll be stories told by many of Cundall’s colleagues about the causes he has supported, as well as special guests including Gardening Australia’s Tino Carnevale, live entertainment and a fabulous rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ by the Huon Valley Concert Band before the cake is cut at midday.
“For many of our audience members, Peter was unmissable viewing each week on Gardening Australia. On behalf of all ABC staff and for the many Australians who sought his advice for their gardens over the years, I wish him the very best on his 90th birthday and congratulate him on this milestone,” said ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie.
Those attending are urged to bring a plate or cake to help celebrate in traditional picnic style.
In addition to the broadcast, there will be various activities throughout the Gardens from 10am – 3pm, including a winter vegetable plant sale, Tomato Relish competition, kid’s activities and food vans with a range of delicious food and beverages.
The affection felt by Tasmanians for ‘their Peter’ will be well and truly on display on the day, as the ABC celebrate the life and legacy of Peter Cundall.
