Campbell McComas Dies

ABC radio regular and master impersonator, Campbell McComas, has died at 52 in Melbourne.

The son of former 3DB broadcaster, Geoffrey McComas, was diagnosed only six weeks ago with acute myeloid leukemia.

McComas created more than 1800 characters with a unique form of comedy – corporate hoaxing – winning over large audiences into believing his particular persona of the day was real. This included a national commercial radio conference (FARB) in the late ’80s.

McComas used to spend three months researching each character and would even go interstate or overseas, if necessary, to get the information he needed.

McComas was a great supporter of charity, performing 30% of his work in aid 400 different causes.

He is survived by wife, Wendy; son, Alistair; his father; mother, Meredith; and brother, Malcolm. A funeral will be held at 2pm Friday at the Scotch College Memorial Hall, followed by a private cremation.

The former lawyer would be remembered by many as the moderator on ABC television’s ‘World Series Debating’.

McComas was awarded the Order of Australia last year for services to entertainment and the community.
