Canberra Survey: 104.7 remains on top

The first Canberra survey for the year has just been released. Canberra’s FM104.7 held top spot in the market ahead of second placed ABC666 and third placed Mix 106.3. Triple J is fourth in the market, followed by 2CC, Radio National, Classic FM and 2CA.

FM104.7 slipped 0.9 share points to 19.4%, with losses in the under 25 demographic being offset by gains elsewhere. The station’s breakfast show is second in the market, behind ABC666.

Mix 106.3 scored the biggest gain of the survey, up by 3.5 share points overall to 15.0%, thanks to a significant gain in the 25-39 demographic. All Mix shifts gained this survey, with mornings recording the biggest increase.

Canberra FM Content Director Drew Chapman says: “Rod and Biggzy have worked hard on connecting with the Canberra community and this will continue… MIX 106.3 has broadcast from over 20 local events since late 2011 including the Queens visit, Australia Day Live and the Royal Canberra Show and there’s more to come.”

Second placed ABC666 dropped by 3.4 points to 15.6%, recording losses in the 40-54 and 65+ demographics. The ABC local station is top at breakfast.

ABC Canberra Manager Andrea Ho has told radioinfo: “We take all survey results in our stride, and work with a longer-term view to please our audience. 666 ABC Canberra saw a drop in a number of programs in this survey compared to the last survey, which is a disappointment. On the upside, we’re delighted that Ross Solly remains at number one in the Breakfast timeslot, as does our weeknight lineup featuring new Evenings host Dominic Knight and Tony Delroy. We’ve also gained ground on the weekends. 666 ABC Canberra’s strength over the longer-term, including in this survey, is with the 40+ listeners. We’re grateful for the support of Canberra listeners over the years.”

2CC had a strong gain, lifting 2.3 share points to 8.7% overall, with gains in the 55+ demographic. Sister station 2CA also rose, gaining 1.1 to 6.0%, also with good gains in the older audience. Cume was up by 800 as a result of increased Time Spent Listening. 2CC had the highest TSL in the market, with the 10+ demographics listening for 13.08 hours per week and the station’s 40+ audience listening for 13.56 hours per week. New breakfast host Leighton Archer posted a gain of 1.2 points to take share to 4.9. The 2CA drive time slot hosted by Chris Tenant increased share by 3.2 points to 6.4%.

General Manager Michael Jones attributes the two stations’ success to keeping a local focus: “2CC and 2CA both aim to keep Canberrans informed about what is happening right here in the ACT. We talk about the things that affect Canberrans everyday, which is a bit different to what some of the other radio stations do. I think people appreciate that.”
