FM104.7 top, big increase for triple j in Canberra survey 2

Canberra’s second survey for 2009 has been released. Triple j and Mix 106.3 were the big winners this survey, while other stations fell. Canberra FM Radio stations FM104.7 and Mix 106.3 are first and second in the market, with ABC stations 666 and triple j in third and fourth place.

Market leader FM 104.7 lost 2.2 share points overall, bringing it to 18.3%, just ahead of stablemate Mix, which gained 2.0 share points.

ABC666 dropped into third place after losing 2.9 share points to score 16.1%, followed by triple j, which scored the biggest gain of the survey, up 4.7 share points to 13.5%.

Two other ABC stations were next, Radio National on 7.5% (up 0.6) and Classic FM on 7.4% (down 0.3).

7th placed 2CC scored 6.3%, up 0.7 share points, while stablemate 2CA lost 1.8 share points to score 4.1%. ABC NewsRadio was down 0.7 to 3.4%.

Triple j’s gain came from a big lift in its 18-39 listeners. FM104.7 won the 10-17 demographic, triple j won 18-24s, FM104.7 won 25-39s, Mix increased its share of 40-54s and won that demographic, and ABC666 won the 55+ demographic.

The ABC666 breakfast show, hosted by Ross Solly lost share, but is still the top rating station in the breakfast timeslot. Mix won mornings and afternoons, FM104.7 won drive with Hamish and Andy, ABC666 won evenings and Mix won weekends.

FM104.7 has a weekly listenership (cume) of 128,100 listeners, Mix has 103,300 weekly listeners and ABC666 has 101,900.

Canberra FM Radio General Manager Eoghan O’Byrne has told radioinfo:

“It is great to see both stations retaining their strong positions in the market. The absolute highlight of this survey is our combined audience is now recorded at 180,700 which is over 55% of the radio listening market in the ACT. This continues both stations’ dominance of the Canberra Radio Market.”

2CC PD Pete Davidson has told radioinfo:

“We are pleased with the increase in share and cumes from last survey. Mark Parton has established himself in Breakfast with an increase in listeners.

“Results for Steve Price, Nights & Weekends were outstanding with sizeable increases. Everyone’s hard work has paid off and I congratulate the team for their efforts. We are looking forward to consolidating this result in 2010 with Mike Frame returning to our lineup.”

Acting 666 ABC Canberra Station Manager Kellie Riordan has told radioinfo:

“666 ABC Canberra continues to head the talkback market in Canberra and compete strongly with the music stations. The results are a testament to our focus on the local community and content that resonates with the people of Canberra.

“666 Breakfast with Ross Solly attracted 21% of the breakfast audience, 2.2% clear of 104.7 (18.8%). The results show that 666 Breakfast is Canberra’s most listened to program across all time slots and stations, with an average audience of 15,900 listeners. This result is a credit to the continued hard work put in by Ross and Breakfast Producers Adam Shirley and Kim Lester to deliver unique program content that is entertaining and informative.”
