The Today Network’s Hamish and Andy will set off on an exciting voyage this afternoon to reach a small island off the coast of Rockhampton, in the final leg of their epic journey towards what they have crowned “The People’s Island”.
After a 200 metre dingy ride battling the elements, Hamish and Andy will take their much-anticipated first steps on The People’s Island, formally called Iron Island, where they will inspect their surrounds on behalf of the people.
All the action will be broadcast on Hamish and Andy’s national Today Network show, Happy Hour, from 3 – 4pm this afternoon.
Hamish and Andy’s journey to The People’s Island follows their hunt for “Australia’s Cheapest Island” which kicked off in April this year. The island has now been officially leased from the Queensland Government, with Hamish and Andy looking to return with listeners before the end of the year to “colonise” the land.
The boys embarked on their mission towards The People’s Island this week, with various stops along the way, including broadcasting yesterday’s show (Tuesday 29 July) from a cottage at the neighbouring Marble Island.
Of the journey which awaits, Hamish said: Ando, we cross the deadly shallows that we’re looking at now…the raging 30 to 40 centimetre swells out there…but we cross that small straight, and we land on The People’s Island.
Andy: Not many have tried…even less have made it.
Hamish: Two cows are rumoured to have been able to get across there, so you know it’s not too deep (laughs).
