The Department of Communicaiotns is set to open a new series of grants for small Australian digital news publishers next month. This follows close on the heels of last weeks announcement about how the government will approach AI scraping of Australian content.
The Journalism Assistance Fund (JAF) is a program which aims to support public interest journalism and media diversity in Australia.
The JAF will deliver $67.6 million in grants to eligible Australian-owned news publishers to support existing journalists who produce’core news’ content that is distributed digitally. The term ‘core news’ is not been defined on the general applicaiton page.
Applications for the JAF are expected to open in mid-November 2025. Grant opportunity guidelines will also be released at that time.
The JAF funding forms part of the government’s News Media Assistance Program.
