The Last Voyage of the Pong Su

Associate Professor, Journalism, University of Wollongong, Siobhán McHugh, has collaborated with The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald to produce a new 10-part podcast investigative podcast, The Last Voyage of the Pong Su.

The podcast, to be released on 8 October, will reveal the true story of the North Korean drug ship the Pong Su, that made global headlines in 2003 when it delivered what was then a record cargo of 150 kilograms of heroin, worth more than $100 million, to shore near Lorne on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.

The ship was then pursued for four days before being intercepted in wild conditions off the NSW coast by an Australian warship carrying elite Special Air Services troops.

The Last Voyage of the Pong Su is the result of months of investigation and is based on unprecedented access to dozens of hours of electronic police surveillance as well as court files and interviews with key players speaking publicly for the first time.
