After three years leading the team at Melbourne’s Indigenous broadcaster 3KND, respected Indigenous media pioneer Jim Remedio is moving on. His position will be filled by former CAAMA Station Manager Gerry Lyons (GMan).
Grant Hansen, the Chairperson of 3KND parent body South Eastern Indigenous Media Association, paid tribute to Jim’s contribution:
“Jim has worked very effectively with the Board, and our station has made great strides in the last few years.
“We’ve been fortunate to have the most experienced manager in the sector here at 3KND. When Jim let us know he was moving on, we were on the lookout for someone who could build on this strong foundation. It’s taken us many months to find the right person, but we couldn’t be happier.”
In Jim’s time at the helm, 3KND has fully overhauled its technology and production systems, stabilised its financial position and strengthened its position as a voice representing community views. It has also concluded an arrangement with co-tenant Songlines and the Victorian government that means KND will move into a new home in the next 12 months
The SEIMA Board has announced that Gerry Terati Lyons has now been appointed to the position of 3KND Manager too replace Jim Remedio. He takes up his position on Monday March 20.
GMan has been in the broadcasting sector for over 25 years including Radio Manager at CAAMA in Alice Springs, for the past 7 years, where he was extremely well regarded as an energetic and community-minded leader who built relationship across all sections of the community.
An Indigenous man from Aotearoa, Gerry has strong relationships in Indigenous communities across Australia. He also built a huge following as an on-air presence in Central Australia, hosting the breakfast show and universally known as ‘the GMan”. His diverse work background also includes Director of JPG Computers his own IT business, Ambulance Officer and Instructor in Martial Arts.
After 30 years in the desert, Gerry is looking forward to returning to Melbourne, where he lived for 11 years prior to heading north.
“I am excited to be appointed Manager of 3KND Radio in Melbourne. They have vision, good governance and a talented staff that made my decision an easy one,” said GMan.
Jim Remedio has formed a new media company, Sundance Indigenous Media Solutions, and, after a short break, will be concentrating on consultancy, technology development and media partnerships to continue to develop Indigenous owned and controlled media.
