New Perth community licence coming

The Australian Communications and Media Authority will make 90.5 MHz available as an FM frequency for a low-power Perth community radio station, however the authority is still undecided on the future of the higher-power 100.9 MHz.

The regulator cancelled a citywide licence of the West Australian Aboriginal Media Association in October for repeatedly breaching licence conditions, but is yet to decide how to proceed with re-allocating that frequency.

The news comes in a variation to the Perth Licence Area Plan which also includes technical modifications for many stations’ operating conditions, and interestingly, an AM frequency reservaton for Digital Radio Mondiale.

Commenting on the new 90.5MHz allocation, Giles Tanner, General Manager of ACMA’s Inputs to Industry Division says: “The two active aspirant community broadcasters Capital Community Radio and Western Sports Media that have been sharing the frequency will continue to share the frequency until licence applications are called for the new permanent service.”
