New website commemorates 2WG Women’s Club

Wagga council has initiated a web page to pay tribute to 2WG’s Women’s club, an organization active between the 1930s and 1960s, run by the radio station for female listeners.

In 1937, five years after 2WG began, Nan Roberts, wife of the station owner Eric Roberts, launched the 2WG Women’s Club. The Club played a pivotal role for women of the Riverina.

Its exploits, particularly fund raising during and after the Second World War, and its lobbying for the establishment of The Haven and subsequent support for the development of the facility, made it a crucial player in the provision of services and support for the aged in the Wagga district.

Radio 2WG itself took over the major role of helping support and run The Haven, something it is still closely involved with today.
