Newstalk ZB #1, NZ listening steady in GfK Survey 1

New Zealand’s first GfK Survey for 2024 has NZME’s Newstalk ZB #1 for audiences aged 10+ for a sixteenth year, and 3.4 million people listening to commercial radio every week.

Alistair Jamison, Radio Broadcasters Association CEO, said:

“While we see some well documented challenges across the New Zealand media landscape, commercial radio holds firm. The last four surveys have shown weekly listening of around 3.4 million. At a time where I know that advertisers are ‘searching’ for answers to declining TV audiences, the answer is in audio.”

Newstalk ZB’s The Mike Hosking Breakfast remained number one in that timeslot with 445,300 listeners. ZM, Flava, The Hits and Radio Hauraki‘s audiences grew with the latter two seeing their biggest ever audiences.

Jason Winstanley, NZME Chief Audio Officer, said:

“We are particularly proud of our ZM team for delivering such a strong result in line with our strategy. NZME has put a huge amount of energy and resource into delivering the most loved and listened to content, investing in attracting the
best radio hosts in the country and complementing our on air offering with strong digital platforms that are an extension of our much-loved radio brands. All of this has led to the growth we are seeing in the results today, with some of our biggest stations showing consistent growth.”

NZME also had the best performing podcast network with more than 17 million downloads so far this year.
