Nigel Milan awarded AM in Australia Day Honours

Radio and television executive Nigel Milan has been named as a Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours list. Other media people to receive awards include Don Burke, Hani Elturk, Ray Martin, John Fordham and Ian Heads.

Nigel Milan is now CEO of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, but was previously managing director of SBS, CEO of the Australian Radio Network and General Manager of 2UE. He is also a former Chairman of FARB (now Commercial Radio Australia).

The citation reads:

“For service to the Australian radio and television industries, and to the community, particularly eye-health, medical and arts organisations.”


Ray Martin received an AM for “service to the community through voluntary roles with charitable, Indigenous, health and sporting organisations, and to the media as a television journalist.”

Don Burke, currently on air at 2UE, was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for “service to conservation and the environment through advisory roles, to the horticultural industry, and to the media as a television presenter.”

Hani Elturk received an OAM “for service to the media as a journalist, and to the Arabic speaking community.”

John Fordham, who manages John Laws and writes a wine column, received an OAM for “service to media, sports and entertainment management, to wine journalism, and to the community.”

Sports journalist Ian Heads received an OAM for “service to the media as a sports journalist, author and mentor.”
