NZ quake site

New Zealand’s Radio 1XX is marking the 20th anniversary of the “Edgecumbe Earthquake” which shook the Eastern Bay Of Plenty at 1:42pm on Monday 2nd March, 1987.

The 6.3 magnitude earthquake was a defining moment for the region’s local radio station as it was the first big test in an emergency situation since 1XX went on the air in June 1971.

1XX has put up onto its website a series of audio clips from that day’s broadcasts.

The site will give anyone a chance to write in with their thoughts and memories of the day and the weeks following the earthquake, what they were doing just before the quakes struck, how they coped and overall feelings about the whole emergency.

Some of the e-mails may be read out on air during the day of the 20th anniversary – Friday 2nd March.
