Origin legends join Triple M’s call team

Triple M’s new NRL Monday Night Football call team will include State of Origin legends Kevin Walters and Mark Geyer.

The pair will join Anthony Maroon with Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show host, former Souths and Roosters player Jimmy Smith, and Triple M’s Dan Ginnane roving the sideline and the stands.

Triple M Monday Night Football starts with the Roosters-Souths game in the opening round at 6.30pm AEDT on March 19.

All Monday night NRL games will be broadcast on 104.9 Triple M Sydney and on KO FM Newcastle, with fixtures featuring Queensland teams heard on 104.5 Triple M Brisbane as well.

The game call will also be available online.

Triple M football executive producer Russell Barwick has told radioinfo that Monday Night Football would be a different call than rugby league fans are used to, with no issues or areas out of bounds: “We don’t just want to make Monday Night football the fourth or fifth game the fans have watched or listened to over the weekend.”

“It’s not just a call of the game, it’s a unique show.”

“We’ve assembled a really exciting and different team. We didn’t want to go with a traditional rugby league call team, but people who would speak to the fans.”

National Rugby League chief executive officer David Gallop says: “The whole atmosphere around the Monday night match promises to be something special for rugby league fans.”

“Live sport on a Monday not only creates a ‘four-day footy’ weekend but it also makes Monday a rugby league-only evening.”

“Traditional audiences will be waiting each Monday to see just how the ladder is finalised after each round while others will have a new opportunity to either tune in or get to a game after work.”

“Triple M’s fresh approach to Monday is going to add another important point of difference to the matches and we welcome them on board.”
