Radio Advertising works, even to catch terrorists in Afghanistan

The United States has launched a tv and radio advertising campaign in Afghanistan, telling listeners about the multi-million dollar rewards for the capture of Osama bin Laden and other militant leaders.

The US State Department says the three month campaign is “to increase awareness of financial rewards being offered for information leading to the apprehension of wanted terrorists.”

The radio and television advertisements were launched under the Rewards for Justice Program. The US has offered up to $US25 million ($A33 million) each for bin Laden and his deputy, Zawahiri, while Mullah Omar has a $US10 million ($A13 million) price on his head.

The adverts “remind the Afghans that these men are not only enemies of Afghanistan, but also of the world, and that in recent years, terrorists have been responsible for the murders of large numbers of their citizens.”

Since its inception in 1984, the Rewards for Justice Program has paid more than $US57 million ($A75 million) to 43 people, who have provided information leading to the capture or death of terrorists.
