At midnight on Sunday March 23, 2025 the two Super Radio Network stations that support the Darling Downs in Queensland, 4AK and 4WK, will switch with each other. 4AK, which played music from the 80s, 90s and now on 1242am stereo and on 99.5 FM in Stanthorpe will now be the news, talk and sports station. 4WK, on 95.5 in Toowoomba, 95.9 in Dalby and 91.5 in Stanthorpe as well as 963AM, becomes a music station.
The lineups as they stand mostly won’t change, they’ll just be heard on the new frequency and station. On 4AK Damo (Damien Lee) still hosts breakfast, then Chris Smith from 2SM Sydney, Pete Davis, Talking Sport and the regular overnight and weekend talk shows.
4WK will have Kramer (Wayne Forbes) on breakfast, requests from 10-2pm, The KIIS Network‘s Will and Woody, The Novos out of Newcastle for the drive home and Matty with his Fresh Nights. Oh, and between 2 and 4pm a show a mystery jock who’ll sound very similar to station General Manager Paul Batchelor. Batch has long been the Caralis family’s right hand man in Queensland and Northern NSW and was instrumental in the stations’ flip. He’s been in Toowoomba a decade now.
This year is also the 90th birthday of 4WK which was officially opened by Littleton Groom on June 28 1935 in Warwick QLD, hence the callsign. It first went to air with step dancing, a monologue and mandolin, banjo and guitar performances. It was a music station in the past.
The Darling Downs region was surveyed last year. 4AK and 4WK were a long way behind the SCA stations Triple M 864 and Hit 100.7. With music now on FM and talk moved to AM stereo, the Super Radio Network, and its local programming, will be hoping for significant listener growth in the future.
