Ray Hadley allegedly called his former producer a “bald, fat c***”

The Downing Centre District Court has heard that 2GB‘s Ray Hadley bullied his colleague Chris Bowen, almost every day, often a dozen times a day, for almost two decades.

The court heard Hadley hurled “vile” homophobic slurs at Bowen, and also called another man a “lazy, black c***”

The court has heard that Hadley’s former producer/panel operator was traumatised and suffered psychiatric injury from Mr Hadley’s constant vilification and verbal abuse at work. His lawyer told the court that “On 20 occasions Mr Hadley called my client a bald, fat c***.”

Barrister Shaun McCarthy, acting for Bowen, wants to keep the names of people giving evidence at the trial a secret even from the defence, because Mr Bowen is concerned about “witness intimidation.”

According to the Daily Telegraph, Mr Hadley’s lawyers are seeking to strike out certain parts of Mr Bowen’s statement of claim and get an order for mediation, arguing the vague accusations have “no factual underpinning” and provide no precise times or dates for the alleged misconduct.

Late last year Hadley had apologised onair for his behaviour, saying that his relationship with Bowen could be volatile, adding that when his panel operator/producer left the station was “one of the saddest days” in his career. On Air Hadley also addressed the matter briefly, saying he has changed his behaviour, but declined to discuss the substance of the case, due to legal restrictions.

UPDATE: The case has now been settled out of court (August 2020).
