Rodney Olsen leaves Sonshine FM after 25 years

After nine and a half years as host of 98five’s morning program and a connection that goes back to before the station began broadcasting, Rodney Olsen has announced that he’s leaving 98five.
Rodney’s final on-air shift will be on Tuesday 26 November and he will commence work with Compassion Australia as a Relationship Manager the following day.
His heart for those living in poverty sees him accepting the new role which will involve meeting with donors, church leaders, advocates and others about the work Compassion is doing to release children from poverty.
While Rodney is still passionate about the vision of 98five, he says that he has felt a growing desire to be part of the solution for those facing a life without hope.
Rodney said: “Over a number of years I have felt a growing burden to serve those who are trapped by poverty. This burden has developed significantly since travelling with Compassion Australia to Haiti and Dominican Republic in 2008. I’ve really enjoyed the variety the Morning Café has allowed me. I’ve been able to interview a range of people including authors, actors, musicians and a range of average people making a difference in our community.”
Rodney started at 98five Sonshine FM as a part time announcer in May 1988 and since 2004 he’s hosted the morning program which has become known as the Morning Cafe.
98five General Manager Bevan Jones said: “Rodney goes with our blessing. He’s given his all to 98five over 25 years and is perfect for the role at Compassion. We couldn’t begrudge him the chance to take on a new challenge that helps change lives of those trapped in poverty.”
98five Sonshine FM is now searching the country for another talented broadcaster to join the team. For more information visit
