Sally Sara takes on The World Today

The ABC has today named Sally Sara as the new presenter for radio current affairs flagship The World Today after its long-time host, the highly respected Eleanor Hall, announced she was stepping down from the role.

Sara is an award-winning journalist who has reported from more than 40 countries as an ABC foreign correspondent, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone, and says she is delighted to be taking on the role, “I started my journalistic career in radio and I’m passionate about it.

“The World Today provides vital coverage and analysis to our audiences across the country. I’m grateful to follow in the footsteps of accomplished presenters including Eleanor Hall.”

Sara began her career as an intern at ABC Canberra, then got her first full time job at 2WEB Bourke.  She will take over the TWT presenting chair from mid-August.

Hall has been one of the ABC’s most distinguished journalists for more than two decades, and presenter of The World Today since 2001.

Her roles have included reporting and presenting for 7.30, Lateline, Foreign Correspondent and The Drum and a posting as a Washington correspondent.

She was invited to become a member of the Australian-America leadership dialogue in 2012, won several awards and scholarships for her journalism and documentaries and has degrees and fellowships from Sydney, Columbia, Stanford and Oxford Universities.

This year she has been on leave pursuing a long-held dream to go to art school ans she says, “It’s been the most extraordinary privilege for me to be let into people’s lives – not just the prominent political and business leaders but even more so the less public people who’ve trusted me with their stories.

“It has been a true joy to have worked with extraordinarily talented, dedicated and generous people and to have had the warm engagement of my listeners over the years.”

Director, News Gaven Morris thanked Hall for her huge contribution to the ABC and to audiences, saying, “Eleanor is a truly international journalist who has reported with intelligence and compassion from all corners of the globe. Hers has been the calm, warm and intelligent voice of lunchtime radio for so many listeners. She will be missed.

“We’re also delighted to have such a strong successor for this important role in Sally Sara – a highly experienced journalist and very talented communicator. The World Today listeners are in good hands.”
